My Internship

The center is amazing and the concept is so great and it is what every kid needs to be doing, but the set up of the whole thing is gonna drive me nuts! It is pretty slow right now because it just opened and not a lot of people know about it. So what they have been doing is bringing in the YMCA summer camps. This is fun, but absolutely crazy. The kids don't listen and the center gets so loud with the motors from 3 bounce houses going and all the sound from the video games. My headaches have increase in number and size to say the least! I also work with teenagers, which is a trial in itself. Two of them have a crush on each other and can't seem to do anything by themselves. So it is not everything I hoped it would be, but it is what I need for school and I really am learning a lot.
My favorite part is when the families come and play together. It is so fun to see the dad's racing their kids on the bikes and obstacle course and the moms on the dance dance revolution. The other part I love is when kids with special needs come in. I usually pick them out of the group when the camps come and spend one on one time with them. It truly is amazing to see those children smile when they have completed something. I almost wish that I had gone into some sort of occupational therapy program, but maybe I can work that into my degree somewhere.
There was one girl named Nikki, 5, who had a spine disorder. The counselors said she couldn't do a lot of the games because her parents did not want her to accidentally fall down or get pushed. So I took her aside and we played some games. We were walking by the bouncy obstacle course and she just looked up and said, "Will you go on that, I just want to watch you go." It made me so sad...so I asked her counselors if they thought it would be ok if I took her throught and helped her climb and go down the slides. So we did and it was so fun to see her smile. She had me do it again and again and again. I was so tired! I asked if one of her counselors could take her and sah said no, that she only wanted me to take her.
Another gilr named McKayla has come in twice. The first time I saw her I thought she was from Africa or one of those 3rd world countries. A beautiful black girl with no hair and silver hoop earrings. I saw all the kids run in to play and sah was walking slowly with a limp. I took her aside and we played DDR. She just focused on one arrow and I stood behind her and did all the rest. We had so much fun! I then took her on some balance balls and helped her with her balance and core strength. She was smiling from ear to ear and telling me how much fun she was having. She then told me she was tired so I took her to get a drink. I then found out that this little 8 year old is fighting brain cancer and is going through treatment right now. She came back yesterday and she had some hair coming back and she was telling me how excited she was for this weekend because she got to go to build a bear with her mom and cousin. So sweet.
Here are some pics of the center...or not, won't let me load.

In other news...Mom and Dad left this morning for Nebraska. It's my mom's high school reunion. Have fun! I will try not to let the party get too out of hand mom. I promise :)

Just kidding, dont have a heart attack. All the doors are locked and the hose is dripping in the pool. I will water the plants in the morning and feed the dog.

Molly is going to Cali tomorrow and she just came home with 3 *NEW* boxes of fruit roll-ups. She couldn't wait to show them to me. They were like plaid and cheetah print and one was a box of stacking kind. I guess the saying different strokes for different folks is true. Me, I just made some chocolate chip cookies and I am a happy camper.

This weekend I will be watchin Pete and Melissa's boys while they go to Las Vegas to celebrate Melissa's B-day which is Thursday. Also they have a blog now. It is
http://www.pmrtj.blogspot.com.

Wow...time to stop typing...and I am ready to watch so you think you can dance.

Have a great day!
